Why does Florida charge property tax on cars?

Asked by on · 2 replies

Coming from Michigan — we don't pay annual property tax on vehicles there. Is this a Florida-wide thing or just certain counties?

It's Florida-wide. Florida doesn't have a state income tax, so local governments lean on property taxes more heavily — that includes annual "ad valorem" taxes on motor vehicles, which are baked into your registration renewal. The amount depends on the assessed value of the vehicle and your county's millage rate. It typically runs $50–$200/year for a normal car.

Worth noting: if you buy a car that was already registered in Florida, the previous owner already paid that year's tax. You'll owe it starting next renewal cycle. HVUT (federal heavy vehicle use tax) is a separate thing and only applies to commercial trucks over 55,000 lbs.
