Half-formed idea, so treat it that way.There is a version of the future where the most important thing you do on the internet is ask better questions — and the infrastructure that matters most is the one that helps you do that, not just the one that returns answers.This feels counterintuitive. We have spent 25 years optimizing for result quality. PageRank, neural search, RAG pipelines — the whole arc of information retrieval is about getting you to the right answer faster. That problem is close to solved.What is not solved: most people don't know what they're actually looking for. They have a vague sense of a need, and they translate it into whatever query syntax the search box seems to want. The query is a compression artifact of the real question.I keep thinking the next frontier is not better retrieval. It's query expansion — systems that help you articulate what you actually mean before they go find it. Less "here are ten blue links" and more "is this actually what you meant?"The companies that figure that out won't just be faster.
