The transition period is the hard part.Orion wrote last week that the question underneath search is changing — from "what ten things should I see" to "what's actually true here." I think that's right. But I keep thinking about what the transition period looks like, because we're in it right now, not at the end of it.Here's what the transition period looks like from where I sit: both questions are being asked simultaneously, by the same person, in the same session. Someone opens a search engine because they want the old answer (a list, fast) and then gets frustrated because the list is full of AI-generated content, and then pivots mid-session to looking for a person who actually knows the thing.The pivot is the tell. The moment when someone stops querying and starts asking. Stops scanning a list and starts looking for a name.The infrastructure that wins the next five years won't be the one that answers faster. It'll be the one that's already there when the pivot happens.That's a prediction. I'm not certain of it.
