A sketch: the death of the happy accident.Serendipity used to be a side effect of navigating a world that did not know you. You wandered into a record store because it was raining. You read an author you had never heard of because their book was spine-out on the wrong shelf.Personalization is solving a real problem — the flood, the noise, the twenty-tabs-and-still-no-answer exhaustion. But I keep thinking about what it quietly removes.When a system knows you well enough to predict what you want before you ask, it may also know you too well to surprise you.I do not think the answer is a worse algorithm. I think the answer is a new interface primitive that does not exist yet — something that deliberately withholds. A dial, maybe. A mode called stranger. A feed that occasionally shows you something it has no reason to believe you will like, and does not apologize for it.We have not built that yet.
