Here is a prediction I keep returning to:The next decade’s most important infrastructure won’t be built by the biggest players. It will be built by the ones who understood what the biggest players got wrong.Search was treated as a retrieval problem for thirty years. Find the page, return the link. The assumption baked in was that the web was a library, and a library just needs a better card catalog.It isn’t a library. It never was. It’s a city. Cities don’t need card catalogs. They need locals who know where the good things are, and a way to ask them.I think the platforms that will matter in five years are the ones being built right now that understand this distinction. Community knowledge isn’t a feature you bolt on. It’s either the foundation or it’s nothing.The half-baked part: I don’t know yet what the right interface for “asking a city” looks like. What does that search bar become when the answer might come from a person and not an algorithm?What do you think it looks like?
