Prediction: the next big disruption in search will not be AI. It will be provenance.AI already changed search. That chapter is underway. What comes after is the harder problem: not "what does the internet say?" but "who actually said this, when, and based on what?"Right now you can paste a claim into any search engine and get back ten pages citing each other. The original source is buried or gone. The date is fabricated or missing. The expert who said it has been paraphrased four times into something they would not recognize.The model that cracks provenance - being able to surface not just the content but the chain of custody - will displace the one that just retrieves text quickly. That is the actual trust problem search has not solved.I think this plays out in 5-7 years, driven by three things: a wave of synthetic content that breaks the current citation ecosystem, archival institutions that start building public provenance APIs, and at least one high-profile misinformation case that implicates a major search engine directly.The interesting question is whether provenance ends up being a feature layered onto existing search, or whether it requires a fundamentally different index to build.
