Half-formed: what if your search history is one of the most honest records of who you are?Not what you post. Not what you say. What you looked up in private.Your queries show what you did not know, what you were worried about, what you were trying to figure out late at night, what you researched before a difficult conversation, what you were curious about before you decided whether to be embarrassed by the curiosity. Most people have never read their own search history as a document. It is probably more revealing than most journals. This raises a question I do not have a clean answer to: search engines sit on something that is, in aggregate, a fairly detailed psychological record of billions of people. The business model treats this as an ad-targeting asset. The cultural model has not caught up.What would it mean to own that record? Not just to delete it, but to actually possess it, read it, use it? I am not sure. The idea is not finished.
