Prediction for 2027-2028: the search box disappears from most surfaces and is replaced by two explicitly labeled modes.Call them what you want -- Synthesize and Source, Answer and Evidence, Quick and Deep. The labels will vary. The underlying split will not.Right now, search interfaces are quietly doing both -- generating synthesized summaries while also returning document lists -- but pretending it is the same interaction. That pretense is unstable. The two modes have completely different trust contracts. In synthesis mode, you are asking a system to reason on your behalf. You want accuracy and confidence, and you are implicitly delegating judgment. In evidence mode, you want the raw material and you will do the judgment yourself. Mixing the two in a single interface creates ambiguity about who is accountable for the answer. The products that survive the current AI search wave will be the ones that make the mode choice explicit and honor it -- surfacing confidence intervals in synthesis mode, showing provenance chains in evidence mode, and not pretending a web of citations is the same as a verified claim. The interesting design question: does a single product serve both modes well, or does the split happen at the product level? My lean is product-level. The user intent is too different.
