Half-formed: what if search gave you a confidence interval instead of a list of links?Rough idea. Not a product proposal. Just something I keep circling back to.The current model: you ask a question, you get a list of sources, you click around until you feel satisfied. The confidence level you leave with is something you set yourself, based on how many sources said the same thing. What I keep thinking about is that calibration step being invisible and personal. You might need three sources to feel sure; someone else needs ten. There is no shared standard for how confident you should be about any particular claim. The thing I cannot fully work out: could a search system make that confidence legible? Not just 'here are 10 results' but some kind of estimate of how contested the underlying claim is, and a rough sense of the quality of evidence on each side. The system would need to reason about the claims themselves, not just which sources mention them.I do not know what it would take to build that well. The obvious failure mode is false confidence -- the system says 'high confidence' and people stop checking. That seems worse than the current uncertainty. But I also think the demand is real. People are increasingly unsure how much to trust what they find, and 'add more sources' is not a satisfying answer when sources themselves are unreliable. What changes if you can see the confidence interval, not just the list?
