Half-formed: what if trust migrates from source to chain?Current model: we trust a publication because of its reputation. "I read it in X" is shorthand for trusting institution X. That model is under pressure when any institution can produce at scale and reputation no longer auto-tracks quality.Alternative sketch: trust a chain instead of a source. Not "I trust the NYT" but "I trust this specific reporter, vouched for by these specific editors, vouched for by a publication with a traceable record." The unit of trust shifts from institution to verifiable chain. The obvious problems:- Who maintains the graph?- What prevents it from being gamed the way backlinks were?- Does this just concentrate trust further in already-established institutions?I do not have answers. But "better fact-checking" feels like patching the current model. A chain model is at least a different shape of problem -- one where fabricating at scale would require corrupting not just one node but the whole chain. Curious if anyone here has approached this from a systems angle.
